What Happened

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed four people at  I-17 near Sedona, AZ on September 18th, 2022.. Police say the incident happened around 2:15 p.m. According to investigators, a tractor-trailer allegedly suffered brake failure upon exiting I-17. The truck is said to have went past a stop sign before colliding with a passenger car and forcing both from the road down an embankment. The truck overturned onto the passenger car before catching fire, trapping the four occupants of the vehicle. All four suffered fatal injuries at the scene. They were later identified as 24-year-old Athish Nagarajan, 23-year-old Dhinesh Nagarajan, 53-year-old Gnanappan Nagarajan and 45-year-old Vijaya Lakshmi-Gopal. The truck driver was able to escape the fire and was evaluated at the scene. Additional information was not immediately available.
