What Happened

State Police are investigating a collision involving a pair of work trucks at Route 1 in Smyrna, DE on April 26th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 11:43 a.m. According to investigators, a box truck headed northbound on Route 1 collided with the left rear of a flat bed truck. Investigators say the flatbed truck was stopped in a northbound shoulder and allege the driver of the box truck fell asleep at the wheel before drifting from the road. The driver of the flatbed was outside the vehicle at the time of the collision and police say he was struck by the vehicle. The driver of the box truck, age 24 from Ranson, WV, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. A front seat passenger of the box truck, a 57-year-old Baltimore, MD man, was killed. The flatbed truck operator was hospitalized in critical condition. Additional information has not been made available.
