What Happened

Custer County officials have information on a crash that killed one person involved at Hwy 2 and Rd 812 in Custer County, NE on August 18th, 2023. Officials say the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. According to authorities, a semi-truck collided with the rear of a tractor under unclear circumstances. Following the collision, the trailer attached to the semi-truck overturned in the roadway. It was next struck by a westbound Ford pickup truck that is said to have possibly been unable to avoid the collision. The operator of the Ford, identified as 57-year-old Patrick Stauffer, died from their injuries. The other two drivers were hospitalized with undisclosed injuries, according to officials. Additional information was not available.
