What Happened

North Carolina Highway Patrol officials are investigating a crash that killed a person at I-85 in Cleveland County, NC on August 1st, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 5 a.m. Investigators say a tractor-trailer collided with the rear of a Kia in traffic, causing the Kia to crash into the vehicle ahead of it. That vehicle, a Tesla, was pushed into the tractor-trailer ahead of it. Killed in the crash was the driver of the Kia, identified as Arlene Bulunda. Three occupants of the Tesla were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The two truck drivers were not injured, according to officials. Officials also say charges were recommended against the driver of the suspected at-fault tractor-trailer.
