What Happened

Area authorities have information on a crash that killed one person involved at US 77 near Hallestsville, TX on August 25th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. According to investigators, a Honda Pilot operated by 61-year-old Pennie Jarret-Gehlhausen was headed westbound on FM 531, nearing US 77. At the same time, authorities say a Toyota Avalon operated by 21-year-old Catherin Brigid Strain was northbound on US 77. Upon reaching the intersection, sources say the Honda pulled into the path of the Toyota, the two vehicles colliding in the process. The impact sent the Honda into a wire fence before it came to rest in a nearby pasture. The Toyota veered into a ditch following the impact. Officials say Jarret-Gehlhausen died at the scene while Strain was hospitalized in stable condition. Additional information was not available.
