What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a driver at State Hwy 73 in Jefferson County, TX on August 12th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 9:35 p.m. According to officials, a Chevrolet Suburban operated by 21-year-old Tristen Dunham is accused of traveling a high rate of speed while headed westbound before colliding with the rear of a Chevrolet Suburban operated by 45-year-old Christian Sykes. The impact from the collision is believed to have caused the Suburban to overturn multiple times, ejecting Sykes from vehicle. Sykes was pronounced dead at the scene while a 5-year-old passenger was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. Officials allege Dunnam left the scene of the crash in a separate vehicle before he was later arrested on a manslaughter and accident involving death charges.
