What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a person at State Hwy 7 in Shelby County, TX on August 18th, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 8:34 a.m. According to investigators, a tractor-trailer operated by a 40-year-old Ricardo Cortes veered from its lane to the right and collided with a parked tractor-trailer and its driver, who was standing outside the truck. Police say the parked truck was unloading power poles with active hazard lights and that its operators were also wearing reflective vests at the time. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Ethan Strother, suffered fatal injuries in the collision. Officers say Cortes, who was not injured, faces criminally negligent homicide charges in connection with the crash.
