What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed a man at FM 349 and FM 2011 in Gregg County, TX on September 25th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 3:10 p.m. According to investigators, a garbage truck was stropped in a westbound lane of FM 349 with flashing lights. Police say an occupant of the vehicle exited the truck, collected a trash can and returned to the truck with their back facing approaching traffic. While dumping the can, the pedestrian was struck by an approaching Ford F-150 before it also struck the garbage truck. The pedestrian, identified as 46-year-old Gerald Loftice, suffered fatal injuries in the incident. The driver of the Ford, identified as 65-year-old Robert Smith, had minor injuries. Reports indicate a charge of Criminal Negligent Homicide was recommended and/or issued.
