What Happened

Area authorities have information on a crash that killed a driver at I-10 in Culberson County, TX on December 7th, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 1 a.m. According to investigators, a tractor-trailer operated by a 58-year-old San Elizario, TX man was headed eastbound before it was struck in the road by a Kia Soul traveling behind it. Police say the Kia first left the road and hit a tree before returning to the road and colliding the the rear of the truck. It then left the road once again into a fence, leaving its driver with fatal injuries. The driver was identified as 87-year-old Richard William Wellman, who officers allege may have fallen asleep at the wheel prior to the crash. The San Elizario man was not injured. Additional information was not available.
