What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed one person involved at State Hwy 71 in Travis County, TX on September 2nd, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 2:41 a.m. According to investigators, a Mercedes-Benz operated by a 30-year-old driver was allegedly traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Hwy 71 prior to colliding with a Polaris Slingshot headed eastbound. The collision ejected the driver of the Slingshot, identified as 40-year-old Santos Patina, from the vehicle. Officials say Patina suffered fatal injuries while a passenger, 38-year-old Emily Lopez, had serious injuries. The Mercedes operator had minor injuries, according to police. Sources indicate charges for Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault were recommended and/or issued against the operator of the Mercedes.
