What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed a woman at State Hwy 158 in Coke County, TX on October 19th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 6:10 a.m. According to investigators, a school bus headed westbound on Hwy 158 at the time. Officials say 35-year-old Tamara Mathis was walking in a westbound shoulder  on the right side of the road, possibly retrieving or returning gasoline for a stranded vehicle . Officials say the school bus driver may have had impaired visibility at the time before colliding with Mathis while moving into a shoulder. Mathis suffered fatal injuries in the collision. Additional information was not immediately available.
