What Happened

State Police are investigating a crash that killed a man at I-81 in Augusta County, VA on November 19th, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 6:17 a.m. According to investigators, a tractor-trailer headed westbound was attempting to merge onto the I-81 south on ramp before veering from the road for unknown reasons. It traveled through a guardrail into the northbound lanes, colliding with a Toyota Tacoma. 76-year-old Mark Fanning, a passenger in the Toyota, died at the scene. The driver, 58-year-old Cynthia Fanning, was hospitalized with serious injuries. The tractor-trailer driver, 59-year-old Ronald Wenger, was also hospitalized and charged with reckless driving.
