What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed two people at I-459 near US 280 in Jefferson County, AL on August 15th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 8:02 p.m. Investigators say the incident involved a vehicle operated by 63-year-old Jefferson Jones collided head-on with a second vehicle operated by 29-year-old Kellie Stephen. A cause for the collision was not stated. Following the collision, police say Jones' vehicle collied with a commercial street sweeper operated by 55-year-old Lolita Matthews. Both Jones and a passenger, 58-year-old Susan Jones, were killed in the collision. Matthews and Stephen were both hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. Additional information was not available.
