What Happened

California Highway Patrol officials are investigating a crash that killed a person at Hwy 99 near Franklin Rd in Merced County, CA on July 20th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 10:40 a.m. According to investigators, a Nissan Frontier was traveling southbound on the highway when it was struck by an axle. Police say the axle detached from a northbound commercial truck and crashed onto the southbound side before striking the Nissan. The driver of the Nissan, only identified as a 58-year-old Avenal woman, was killed. A five-year-old child in the vehicle was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
