What Happened

Florida Highway Patrol officials are investigating a crash that killed a woman at I-75 in Sumter County, FL on August 13th, 2021. Police say the incident happened around midnight. A Toyota Camry operated by a 23-year-old woman lost control when she allegedly fell asleep at the the wheel. The Camry drifted into a shoulder and center median after overcorrection before hitting a guardrail. The woman and her 22-year-old passenger were standing near the vehicle, which did not have lights active, when they and the vehicle were struck by a tractor-trailer. The 23-year-old died at the scene. Her passenger was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.
