What Happened

State Police are investigating a two-vehicle collision that injured two people at I-55 in Springfield, IL on December 5th, 2021. Officials say it occurred around 5:15 p.m. A semi-truck operated by 50-year-old Bruce Costello is accused of failing to slow in traffic and colliding with the rear of a Toyota Prius operated by 43-year-old Jeffrey Ekena. Ekena and his 8-year-old passenger were injured when the vehicle was pushed from the road into a concrete culvert and overturned. They were hospitalized with minor injuries. Costello, who was uninjured, was allegedly cited for DUI and Following Too Closely.
