What Happened

State Police are investigating a crash that killed two people at Indiana Toll Rd in South Bend, IN on June 1st, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 3 p.m. According to investigators, a semi-truck was reportedly approaching a construction zone with vehicles that were stopped for traffic. Police allege the vehicle failed to control its speed before it collided with the rear of a vehicle, creating a chain reaction crash that resulted in at least one vehicle catching fire. The occupant of that vehicle died at the scene, as did one other motorist. They were identified as 82-year-old Jacqueline Luczak and 45-year-old Eric Klein. Five others, including 86-year-old Dolores Kallas, 60-year-old Donna Tirva, 21-year-old Lena Tirva and 48-year-old John Albrizio all reportedly were injured. Police arrested the driver of the truck, identified as 26-year-old Chasen Thompson, on a charge of possession of marijuana. Additional information was not available.
