What Happened

State Police are investigating a crash that killed a man at I-69 in Steuben County, IN on July 9th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 1:15 p.m. According to police, a pickup truck is said to have suffered a mechanical issue, forcing its driver to bring the vehicle to a stop in a shoulder. The driver, identified as 45-year-old Michael Shaw, exited the vehicle and begun to access the engine of the truck to check on the potential issue. As he did so, investigators allege the possibility that Shaw may have stepped into a lane of travel prior to being struck by an oncoming semi-truck. The collision left Shaw with fatal injuries. The tractor-trailer and driver remained at the scene for authorities, who did not have additional information to share.
