What Happened

Kansas Highway Patrol officials are investigating a crash that killed a man at US 54 in Kiowa County, KS on April 19th, 2023. Police say the incident happened as a Chevrolet Tahoe headed westbound veered into an eastbound lane while attempting to avoid a semi-truck that came to a stop in a westbound lane. The Tahoe then collided with a Chrysler Pacifica that was headed eastbound. A passenger in the Tahoe, identified as 19-year-old Jaidyn Barz, suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Jesse Hall, was hospitalized with serious injuries. An additional passenger, 19-year-old Jonathan Gajeuski, had injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. The driver of the Chrysler, identified as 19-year-old Cody Metz, was also hospitalized with more serious injuries. Police did not provide additional information regarding why the truck allegedly came to a stop or the condition of the driver.
