What Happened

Lafayette Police are investigating a crash that killed a truck driver at I-49 in Lafayette, LA on May 20th, 2023. Officials say 57-year-old Mariano Gonzalez was behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler headed northbound on I-49 at the time of the crash. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled into a shoulder were it struck an unoccupied, abandoned vehicle. The impact is said to have caused the truck to lose control and veer from the road before coming to rest near the NW Evangeline Thruway. Gonzalez suffered fatal injuries in the crash. No other injuries were reported. Police did not have additional information available.
