What Happened

State Police have confirmed details in a crash that killed one person at  US Hwy 285 near Artesia, NM on December 6th, 2021. They say it happened around 10:30 a.m. and involved a pair of pickup trucks and a tanker truck. According to investigators, a tanker truck operated by a 45-year-old male collided with the rear of a NMDOT pickup truck operated by 58-year-old Mittie Runyan. The impact pushed that truck into the one ahead, another NMDOT truck operated by a 46-year-old male NMDOT employee. Runyan was seriously injured and taken to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries. Two NMDOT employees working outside the vehicle were hospitalized with undisclosed injuries while one, the driver of the second truck, was not injured. The driver of the tanker truck was also uninjured. It was not said if charges were expected to be filed.
