What Happened

New Mexico State Police are investigating a crash that killed a driver at I-40 in Cibola County, NM on August 19th, 2021. Police say the incident happened around 1:59 p.m. A tractor-trailer headed eastbound on I-40 reportedly suffered a tire blowout causing it to lose control and cross a center median. It then collided head-on with a westbound tractor-trailer operated by 64-year-old Steven Kay Hales. Hales suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The other driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
