What Happened

State Police have arrested a driver in connection with a collision that killed a pedestrian at Forest Hill Rd and Platinum Ave in Staten Island, NY on May 13th, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 4:30 a.m. Investigators revealed a transit bus operated by 52-year-old Darrell Sweet was headed eastbound on Forest Hill Rd when it turned left onto northbound Platinum Ave when it collided with a pedestrian that was crossing at an intersection. The bus reportedly continued heading northbound without remaining at the scene. The pedestrian, identified as 69-year-old Patrick Varriale, suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Sweet had been arrested on charges that include leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and failure to exercise due care.
