What Happened

North Carolina Highway Patrol officials are investigating a crash that killed a woman at Dragstrip Rd in Benson, NC on April 14th, 2023. Police say the incident involved a Jeep colliding with an oncoming dump truck. The collision left and 11-year-old passenger as well as 37-year-old Jennifer Camillo-Melendez, suffering fatal injuries after they were ejected from the vehicle. A second child passenger was hospitalized with serious injuries. 48-year-old Joel Guadalupe-Figuera and the driver, 30-year-old Kiara Shalimar Guadalupe-Mercado, were hospitalized for treatment. The driver of the dump truck, 28-year-old Nikon Henry, suffered minor injuries. Police say Guadalupe-Mercado was allegedly charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to stop at a stop sign.
