What Happened

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating a crash that killed one of its officers at I-85 in Charlotte, NC on December 22nd, 2021. Around 3:40 a.m., investigators say the collision occurred between dour police vehicles and two semi-trucks in the southbound lanes near W.T. Harris Blvd. They believe a truck operated by 50-year-old Daniel Leon Morgan failed to reduce its speed and move to a left open lane before colliding with the four vehicles, another semi-truck and an officer. That officer was identified as 33-year-old Mia Goodwin, who suffered fatal injuries from the crash. Three other officers were injured, however, their injuries were said to be non-life-threatening. Morgan was arrested and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle, Failure to Reduce Speed ad Felony Failure to Move for Stopped Emergency Vehicles.
