What Happened

State Police are investigating a crash that killed two people at I-77 in Independence, OH on December 1st, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 12:30 a.m. According to investigators, a Ford hatchback was headed southbound before leaving the roadway for unclear reasons. Reports say the vehicle struck a nearby median wall before becoming disabled in a lane of travel. From there, police say an approaching southbound semi-truck collided with the Ford and a Chevrolet hatchback that was parked ahead of the Ford. Prior to the collision, despots say two occupants of the Chevrolet and one occupant of the Ford had all exited from the vehicles. They were struck by the truck, which overturned. The two occupants of the Chevrolet, identified as 29-year-old Johnny Brooks and 32-year-old Gertrude Stutler, suffered fatal injuries. The Ford operator was hospitalized with serious injured reports say, while the truck operator had less serious injuries. Additional information was not available.
