What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are gathering details on a crash that killed a man at  TX 21 in Bastrop County, TX on January 23rd, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 8:10 p.m. A Ford F-150 operated by 36-year-old Jose Avila is said to have been headed eastbound on TX 21 approaching the FM 1209 intersection. A Chevrolet Cobalt operated by 21-year-old Melvin Lopez was stopped at North Gaines Rd and entered into the intersection on a green light. Investigators say the Ford, which had a red light, traveled into the intersection and collided with the Cobalt, causing fatal injuries to 28-year-old passenger, Aroldo Gonzalez. Police allege Avila was intoxicated at the time of the crash and arrested him on a charge for Intoxication Manslaughter.  Police say Avila also faces Intoxication Assault charges.
