What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed a driver at US 271 in Gilmer, TX on January 17th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 5:41 a.m. According to investigators, a Hyundai Elantra operated by 32-year-old Canaan Matthew Smallwood was exiting a private driveway at the time. Officers say the area was covered in heavy fog at the time. As the vehicle pulled it, it was alleged to have been crossing over to make a turn before it collided with a tractor-trailer operated by a 76-year-old Overton man. The collision left Smallwood with fatal injuries. The Overton man was evaluated for possible injuries. Additional information was not provided.
