What Happened

Authorities have information on a crash that injured at least two people at US 277 in Maverick County, TX on December 8th, 2023. Officials believe the incident happened around 8:15 p.m. Investigators say a tractor-trailer headed southbound on US 277 allegedly turned when unsafe to do so, performing a u-turn ahead of a northbound Hyundai Santa Fe. In the process, reports say the two vehicles collided, the impact sending the Hyundai into a nearby ditch. Police say the crash left the 52-year-old driver of the Hyundai and a 42-year-old passenger, Carmen Velez, seriously injured. The other driver, who was not publicly identified, was allegedly uninjured. Reports indicate a Turned When Unsafe charge was recommended and/or issued against the operator of the tractor-trailer.
