What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed a person at Burrell-Wingate Rd in Jefferson County, TX on July 9th, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 8:15 p.m. Police say a westbound Toyota SUV is said to have been traveling at an unsafe speed while taking a curve before it veered from the road through a ditch. It then struck 71-year-old Deputy James Lee, who was operating a riding lawnmower in front of his home at the time. Lee suffered fatal injuries at the scene while the Toyota driver, identified as 38-year-old Michael Miller, was also hospitalized. He was later taken to jail on an Intoxicated Manslaughter charge.
