What Happened

Smith County Police are investigating a crash that killed an officer at Hwy 155 in Tyler, TX on July 28th, 2022. Investigators say a Mercedes veered from the road and collided with the rear of a patrol unit conduction a traffic stop. 29-year-old Deputy Lorenzo Bustos was reportedly standing at the rear of a patrol unit at the time and suffered major injuries he passed away from. Another officer in the patrol unit suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police say one of two individuals being detained at the time of the collision was also injured as was 39-year-old training officer Michael Skinner, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Reports indicate 21-year-old Daniel Nyenze Nyabuto was arrested on driving while intoxicated and intoxication assault charges.
