What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a person at  FM 2517 in Panola County, TX on February 27th, 2022. They say they were called to the scene of the incident around 12:01 a.m. According to initial investigation, a passenger vehicle, operated by 18-year-old Mitchell Williams, was allegedly traveling at an unsafe speed before losing control and hydroplaning on the wet roads. Police believe the vehicle went into a ditch and crashed into a tree on the passenger side, causing fatal injuries to the passenger, identified as 18-year-old Devin Smith. Police allege that Williams was found to be intoxicated at the time of the crash and have indicated that charges are pending. Additional information was not provided.
