What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed at least three people at US 54 in Hartley County, TX on November 4th, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 11:30 a.m. as traffic was stopped for road construction. Police say a tractor-trailer headed southbound did not stop in time to avoid a collision and collided with another vehicle, creating a chain reaction crash. 81-year-old Marvin Wirtjes and 79-year-old Shirley Wirtjes both died at the scene. Also killed was the driver of the the tractor-trailer, identified as 58-year-old Donald Diebel Jr. Several others were hospitalize for treatment of minor injuries.
