Authorities have information on a crash that killed a man at I-35E in Denton, TX on December 30th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 3:15 a.m. According to investigators, a Dodge Charger operated by 18-year-old Jonathan Vargas was allegedly headed southbound in I-35E proper to veering out of its lane. Reports indicate a nearby officer attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle before it allegedly sped away at a high rate of speed. Soon after, police say the vehicle collided with another vehicle occupied by three family members, including 47-year-old Douglas Gonzalez Cerna. Reports continue that the vehicle was pushed from the road, the collision severe enough Gonzalez Cerna suffered fatal injuries. The driver and second passenger were hospitalized with injuries considered to be non-life-threatening, reports say. Vargas was arrested on possible Intoxication Manslaughter and Evading Arrest charges, sources indicate. Additional information was not available.
