What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed a person at US 77 in Kenedy County, TX on August 17th, 2021. Police say the incident happened around 10:20 p.m. A Chevrolet Tahoe operated by 48-year-old Fernando Benavidez Jr reportedly pulled over into a shoulder after running out of gas. An approaching tractor-trailer is said to have veered from the road and collided with the Tahoe. The truck overturned in the collision and slid off the roadway, catching fire in the process. Both Benavidez and the driver of the semi-truck died at the scene. Benavidez's passenger, 67-year-old Fernando Benavidez Sr, was hospitalized with serious injuries. Reports indicate the truck driver, identified as 47-year-old Juan Carlos Hernandez, had a BAC level of 0.194.
