What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a collision that killed two people at US Hwy 77 in Kenedy County, TX on August 17th, 2021. Police say the incident happened around 10:20 p.m. A Chevrolet Tahoe operated by 48-year-old Fernando Benavidez Jr was towing a trailer when the vehicle reportedly ran out of gas. It pulled over and parked in a shoulder before shortly after being stuck by a truck tractor that veered from the road. The impact ejected Benavidez from the vehicle while the tractor overturned and caught fire. Both Benavidez and the tractor driver died. A passenger in the Tahoe was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.
