What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that injured a driver at I-635 in Mesquite, TX on September 24th, 2021. Police say the incident happened around 2:09 p.m. A Mazda 3 operated by 42-year-old Jennifer Fitzwater was stopped in traffic on a ramp from I-30 to enter southbound I-635. Investigators say the Mazda was put into reverse and struck a tractor-trailer stopped behind it before stopping briefly and reversing again. As traffic started moving, the Mazda traveled down the ramp, reportedly attempting to flee the scene. Fitzwater, who responding officers say allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol and smelled of alcohol on their arrival, was seriously injured in hospitalized. A charge of Driving While Intoxicated was also issued. The truck driver involved was not injured.
