What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a person at US 84 in Garza County, TX on January 17th, 2022. They say the incident happened around 4 a.m. A Dodge Ram operated by 31-year-old Corey Scott Kohtenbeutel is said to have been traveling eastbound on Hwy 84 when the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. The truck veered from the road into the shoulder as a result and stuck a guardrail shortly after Kohtenbeutel awoke and attempted to brake. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn multiple times, ejecting two passengers. One of the passengers, identified as 31-year-old Johnnie Cope, suffered fatal injuries in the collision. The other two passengers, ages 36 and 33, were seriously injured. Kohtenbeutel was also seriously injured in the crash. Additional details were not available.
