What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that injured a driver at TX 33 in Hemphill County, TX on June 15th, 2021. Police say it happened around 11:55 a.m. 77-year-old Johnny Lynn Schaef was retrieving mail from mailboxes and re-entered his vehicle, a Nissan Xterra, parked on the south side shoulder. It then turned onto the north shoulder and turned right into the path of an oncoming tractor=trailer. Both vehicles collided and the Xterra was pushed into a ditch and overturned. Schaef suffered serious injuries and was charged with Turning When Unsafe. The other driver was not injured.
