What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed several people at I-14 in Bell County, TX on July 16th, 2022. Police say it happened just before 2 a.m. Their investigation revealed a Toyota Corolla operated by 22-year-old Matthew Fernandez was headed eastbound on I-14 in the westbound lanes prior to colliding head-on with a Kia Optima. The Toyota caught fire in the collision and Fernandez died at the scene. Two passenger in the Kia, identified as 22-year-old Joshua Smith and 20-year-old Aaliyah Marie Peinado, also died at the scene. The driver of the Kia was hospitalized with serious injuries.
