What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a bicyclist at FM 529 in Harris County, TX on October 1st, 2021. Police say the incident happened around 3:17 a.m. A Toyota Corolla operated by a 32-year-old Houston man was headed eastbound on FM 529. A bicycle operated by 59-year-old Matthew Lawrence Peck was also headed eastbound in an outside lane alongside a Chevrolet pickup truck. According to investigators, visibility in the area was poor and the bicycle veered from its lane, causing the Toyota to collide with the cyclist. Peck was ejected from the bicycle and struck by the Chevrolet truck, which fled the scene after the collision. Peck suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. Later reports allege that Peck may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
