What Happened

Houston Police are investigating a crash that killed a driver at I-610 in Houston, TX on July 22nd, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 2:15 a.m. According to investigators, a Toyota Tacoma was southbound when it stopped in a shoulder near the northbound US 59 ramp. Police say the driver and a passenger were working to change a flat tire on the truck as a Ford Mustang approached. The vehicle collided with the rear of the Toyota and passenger, identified as 48-year-old Miguel Lopez Aguirre. Aguirre suffered fatal injuries while the driver, a woman who was not identified, suffered injuries believed to be minor in nature. Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Daija McElwee, who authorities have charged with Intoxication Manslaughter.
