What Happened

Authorities are investigating a crash that killed two people at FM 1462 in Brazoria County, TX on August 9th, 2024. Police say the incident happened around 12:59 p.m. According to investigators, a GMC Sierra was headed southwest on FM 1462, approaching a Toyota Corolla ahead slowing to make a turn. Reports allege the GMC failed to control its speed before colliding with the rear of the Toyota, pushing the Toyota into the path of a tractor-trailer in an adjacent, oncoming lane. The vehicle was struck once again, the second impact sending the vehicle into a nearby ditch. Reports say both 85-year-old Toyota driver, Shirley Updike, and 52-year-old passenger, Mark Updike, were fatally injured in the crash. The tractor-trailer operator had possible injuries, police say, as did the GMC operator. Additional information was not available.
