What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a collision that killed a driver at State Hwy 36 in Bell County, TX on December 11th, 2021. They say the incident took place around 1:28 a.m. According to reports, a Dodge Dart operated by 51-year-old Sonya Garcia was headed southbound on Hwy 36 while a Dodge Journey operated by a 52-year-old Hamlin woman was traveling northbound in a southbound lane. Investigators believe the Journey performed a turning maneuver to correct back into the proper lane while the Dart took evasive action and went left. As both vehicles did so, they collided head-on, causing fatal injuries to Garcia and serious injuries to the other driver. Police allege the Journey driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
