What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a collision that killed a person at TX 302 in Ector County, TX on August 29th, 2021. Police say the incident happened around 2:15 a.m. A Ford F-350 operated by 48-year-old John C Draper was headed northbound behind a trio of motorcycles when it failed to control its speed and crashed into the bikes. 50-year-old Steven Cortez was seriously injured in the collision and taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. 47-year-old Hector Acosta Jr was hospitalized with serious injuries. Draper and the third motorcyclist, 31-year-old Edward Chandler, were not injured. Draper was charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault.
