What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a child at Hwy 64 in Rusk County, TX on May 21st, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 7:45 p.m. According to investigators, a Nissan Rogue was eastbound headed on Hwy 64 when it veered tom the road for unknown reasons. Police say the vehicle veered through the grass into a creek before overturning and ejecting three child occupants. One of the children, a 5-year-old girl, suffered injuries she later died from. The other two children were hospitalized in serious condition, one of whom also later died. The driver of the Rogue, 28-year-old Iliana Ayala and a passenger, 25-year-old Edna Grimaldo, were hospitalized in stable condition. Police allege that Ayala was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
