What Happened

Authorities are investigating a crash that killed a person at US 83 in Mercedes, TX on December 15th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 6:19 p.m. According to investigators, Ford Focus was westbound one an exit ramp before allegedly attempting to return back onto the highway in a method officers allege was unsafe. The vehicle hit a guardrail and spin back onto the highway where it was struck by an approaching Dodge Ram 1500. Reports say 41-year-old Ford passenger, Vanessa Villarreal Moreno, was fatally injured. The driver of the Ford, a 68-year-old old woman who was not publicly identified, was seriously injured reports say. Sources indicate the driver was charged with Change Lanes When Unsafe and Intoxication Manslaughter. Additional information was not available.
