What Happened

State Police are looking into a crash that killed one person at I-64 in James City County, VA on December 7th, 2021.  They say it happened around 7:22 a.m. just past the 231 mile marker of I-64. A Chevrolet Express van operated by 31-year-old Humberto Vara-Luna is said to have been headed eastbound when it lost control for unknown reasons. It then veered from the road and overturned multiple times. A rear passenger, 30-year-old Sara Maria Diaz-Nieto, was killed in the collision. A front seat passenger, 30-year-old Wilber Escobar-Orellana was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Vara-Luna was also hospitalized with serious injuries and reports indicate he was charged with reckless driving and driving while revoked. Investigators also say that alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
