What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed two people at Hwy 115 in Demorest, GA on May 2nd, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 2 p.m. According to investigators, a vehicle occupied by 82-year-old Bobbie Lee Washington York was stopped behind a Ford Fusion stopped on a construction zone. While stopped, York's vehicle was struck in the rear by a dump truck operated by 47-year-old Michael Speed. Investigators allege the truck was following too closely prior to the collision, which created a chain reaction crash involving several other vehicles. Mr. York and his passenger, 37-year-old Jason York, both suffered fatal injuries in the crash. One driver involved, identified as 41-year-old Rebecca Thomason, was hospitalized with serious injuries. Officers recommended DUI and Vehicular Homicide charges against Speed. Additional information was not available.
