What Happened

State Police have identified the person killed in a crash at I-74 in Batesville, IN on October 13th, 2023. Police say it happened around 5 a.m. and named 80-year-old Thomas Kotzbauer as the victim. According to investigators, a passenger vehicle operated by Kotzbauer was allegedly stopped for unclear reasons in a westbound lane of travel. It was not known if the vehicle was disabled, however, it was stated the vehicle was parked without active lighting. Officials say an approaching UPS semi-truck collided with the vehicle, pushing both vehicles from the road. The impact left Kotzbauer with fatal injuries at the scene. The condition of the other driver was not stated and police did not have any additional information.
